bug(homebrew): gateway fails to start — log directory missing after fresh install #3964

Description

@ctron

Summary

After a fresh brew install openshell (v0.1.2), brew services restart openshell silently fails to start the gateway. openshell gateway info returns "Connection refused."

Root cause

The launchd plist (homebrew.mxcl.openshell.plist) sets StandardErrorPath and StandardOutPath to /opt/homebrew/var/log/openshell/openshell-gateway.{err,out}.log, but the formula does not create the /opt/homebrew/var/log/openshell/ directory during installation. launchd silently refuses to start the service when it cannot open the log files.

Reproduction

  1. brew install nvidia/openshell/openshell (fresh install, no prior version)
  2. brew services restart openshell
  3. openshell gateway info → "Connection refused"
  4. brew services info openshell → Running: false, Loaded: true, Schedulable: false
  5. No log files exist in /opt/homebrew/var/log/openshell/

Workaround

mkdir -p /opt/homebrew/var/log/openshell
brew services restart openshell

Suggested fix

Add mkdir -p /opt/homebrew/var/log/openshell to the formula's post_install block (or the service wrapper script), so the log directory is guaranteed to exist before launchd attempts to start the service.

Environment

  • macOS (Darwin 27.0.0, arm64)
  • openshell 0.1.2
  • Homebrew tap: nvidia/homebrew-openshell
