IIUC unconditionally using virtiofs would break the ability to run nixos vms on Darwin. See NixOS/nixpkgs#562444. Per https://github.com/Mic92/nixos-shell#running-different-architectures--operating-systems-ie-linux-on-macos, it sounds like this is something nixos-shell is documented as supporting. |

In my experience, trying to run nixos-shell on MacOS already didn‘t work before this change, regardless of what the docs say. IIRC I tried to help @Linschlager set it up and we did not manage. |
