Why

Until now effect-orm compiled queries but couldn't send them in every runtime, and the traces it produced said little:

  • No ClickHouse client for fetch runtimes. The only ClickHouse SqlClient was Effect's @effect/sql-clickhouse, which wraps the Node client, so ClickHouse queries couldn't run in Cloudflare Workers, Deno or a browser. superwall/paywall-next had to build its own executor for its API Worker.
  • Generic spans. Each statement only got Effect's sql.execute span. Its db.operation.name is the client method name ("execute"), and it carries no table, because only a compiled query knows that.

What

@maple-dev/effect-orm/clickhouse-http

A ClickHouse SqlClient built on Effect's HttpClient. Pass it FetchHttpClient.layer and it runs anywhere fetch does. It plugs into Database like any other client.

  • Interrupting cancels the query. A timeout or interrupt aborts the request and sends KILL QUERY … ASYNC for that statement's query_id.
    • This mirrors what Effect's Node driver does.
    • It's needed because, as I measured, ClickHouse kept running a query for more than 4 s after its connection closed. It only notices a closed connection when it next writes a block.
    • Queries also send cancel_http_readonly_queries_on_client_close=1.
  • Errors use Effect's own SqlError reasons: SqlSyntaxError, AuthenticationError, AuthorizationError, StatementTimeoutError or UnknownError. They're read from X-ClickHouse-Exception-Code, falling back to Code: N in the response body, with the same codes as @effect/sql-clickhouse. Database therefore maps them the same way.
  • Credentials: they travel in the Authorization header. A URL that contains credentials, a query string or a fragment is rejected.
  • API: asCommand, withQueryId and withSettings, as on Effect's driver. sql template values are bound server-side as {pN: Type} / param_pN. .stream reads JSONEachRow line by line.
  • Startup: no ping on startup, so a Worker's first request pays nothing extra.
  • No extra HTTP span: the per-request HTTP span is turned off. The statement span covers the request already, and the HTTP span's URL would carry bound values.

A span for every Database statement

Each statement gets one client span, following the OpenTelemetry database conventions:

  • Name: the query summary, e.g. SELECT events. If the statement has no single table, the name is just the operation, or the database system.
  • Attributes: db.system.name (clickhouse / postgresql), db.operation.name, db.collection.name, db.query.summary, db.response.returned_rows, and error.type on failure.
  • Custom names: Db.withQuerySummary(name) names the statements an effect runs.
  • Nesting: Effect's sql.execute span sits inside the new span and keeps the query text.

CompiledQuery.collection

The table a statement targets: the FROM table of a SELECT, or the table a write changes. It's absent when there's no single table: a subquery, a union, or a CTE (even one that shadows a table's name). This is what lets spans name the table without parsing SQL.

Testing

  • Fake HTTP client (src/clickhouse-http/client.test.ts, 14 tests). These cover:
    • the request: body, format, auth header, URL parameters, and no credentials in the URL;
    • server-side parameter binding, command mode, and the query-id and settings overrides;
    • five error codes plus the body fallback;
    • streaming;
    • Database.run, including decoding 64-bit integers;
    • URL validation;
    • that an interrupt sends KILL QUERY for the right query id.
  • Recording tracer on PGlite (src/database/tracing.test.ts, 7 tests). These cover span names and attributes for a SELECT, an INSERT with RETURNING, and a subquery (no table); the summary override; error.type; that sql.execute is nested under the new span; and collection.
  • Live ClickHouse 26.6 (tests/clickhouse-http.clickhouse.test.ts, 5 tests). These cover a builder query through Database, server-side binding, streaming, error classification, and an interrupted query leaving system.processes. That last test fails without the kill, which I checked by removing it.
  • Whole suite:
    • all live suites pass against that server, 302 tests;
    • bun run typecheck and bun run test pass (705 tests, doc citations, export catalog, doc examples);
    • test:package passes, with the CommonJS consumer loading all 13 entry points from the packed tarball.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an HTTP-based ClickHouse client for Cloudflare Workers and other fetch runtimes, with query cancellation, typed errors, credential support, server-side parameter binding, and per-query settings.
    • Added options for command requests and query IDs, plus support for streaming query results.
    • Added OpenTelemetry-compatible database statement spans, with an option to name groups of statements.
    • Added target-table metadata for compiled reads and writes.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup and usage guidance for the ClickHouse client and database tracing.

effect-orm compiled queries but left running them to Effect's
@effect/sql-clickhouse, which wraps the Node client and cannot run in
Cloudflare Workers; and the spans a query got were Effect's generic
`sql.execute`, whose `db.operation.name` is the client method.

- @maple-dev/effect-orm/clickhouse-http: a ClickHouse SqlClient over
  Effect's HttpClient. Interrupting a statement aborts its request and
  sends KILL QUERY for its query_id (a closed connection alone left the
  query running on the server); failures carry the SqlError reasons
  Effect's driver uses; credentials go in a header; asCommand,
  withQueryId and withSettings behave as there.
- Database opens one client span per statement, per the OpenTelemetry
  database conventions: named after db.query.summary (`SELECT events`),
  with db.system.name, db.operation.name, db.collection.name,
  db.response.returned_rows and error.type. withQuerySummary names a
  group of statements. sql.execute nests inside with the query text.
- CompiledQuery.collection: the FROM table of a SELECT, or the table a
  write changes; absent over a subquery, union or CTE.

Tested offline against a fake HttpClient and a recording tracer on
PGlite, and live against ClickHouse 26.6, including that an interrupted
query leaves system.processes (it fails without the kill).

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge
Interrupt/KILL, parameter binding and the new span attributes are pinned by the fake-HTTP, tracer and live ClickHouse tests; only the outbound call's peer is missing.
quality 90/100 · 1 warning · tests covered · risk medium · 2/2 new units observable

Adds a fetch-based ClickHouse SqlClient (@maple-dev/effect-orm/clickhouse-http) and gives every Database statement a semconv-shaped client span, plus CompiledQuery.collection for the target table. Well tested and it reuses the exact attribute spellings and span naming the org's own db spans already emit; safe to merge once the outbound call gets a peer.

  • /clickhouse-http exports a ClickHouse SqlClient over Effect's HttpClient, with asCommand, withQueryId, withSettings.
  • An interrupt or timeout sends KILL QUERY for the statement's query_id.
  • Database opens one client span per statement, named SELECT events / INSERT events.
  • CompiledQuery.collection carries the FROM or written table, absent for subqueries, unions and CTEs.

Before merge

  • Manual · Let the two ClickHouse builder checks (26.2 and 26.8) finish — the live client and interrupt suites only run there.

- Spans carry server.address, server.port and peer.service ("clickhouse",
  overridable through spanAttributes, which now apply last). With the
  HTTP span off, nothing else named the server, so service maps drew no
  edge to it.
- A path in `url` is kept, for ClickHouse behind a proxy prefix; the
  config doc said paths were refused, which the code never did.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge
F1 is fixed: the peer is named on the statement span with the org's existing peer.service=clickhouse spelling, and a test pins the override order.
quality 90/100 · 1 warning · tests covered · risk low · 1/2 new units observable

The follow-up adds server.address, server.port and peer.service to the ClickHouse HTTP client's statement spans, and keeps a URL path for a proxy prefix. Both are pinned by new tests; the change is contained and safe to merge.

  • Client.make span attributes now name the peer: server.address, server.port, peer.service
  • Caller spanAttributes are spread last, so a deployment can rename peer.service
  • validateUrl keeps a URL path, for ClickHouse behind a proxy prefix
  • client.test.ts pins the span attributes, the kept path and the URL rejection

Still open from earlier reviews

What was checked
  • peer.service=clickhouse matches the spelling already live in the org's traces (explore_attributes), so no second spelling of the key is introduced
  • Db.run through the client is exercised end to end, including 64-bit decoding (client.test.ts:146)
  • validateUrl still refuses credentials, a query string and a fragment (client.test.ts:231), while the path case is pinned at client.test.ts:187

Keep KILL QUERY active during stream consumption.

send attaches Effect.onInterrupt(() => kill(queryId)) only to http.execute(request). executeStream consumes response.stream after that effect completes. Interrupting the stream therefore does not send KILL QUERY. The request abort alone may not stop ClickHouse while it computes its first block, so the remote query can continue running.

Register the interruption cleanup around the response stream and reuse the same queryId. Add a test that acquires a response, blocks its body, and interrupts stream consumption.

…early

The KILL QUERY guard covered only the request, which returns once
ClickHouse sends its headers, i.e. with the first block. Reading the body
afterwards, or a stream ended by interruption, failure or an early stop
(`Stream.take`), left the query running on the server.

`send` now hands back the query id; a JSON read kills on interrupt, and a
stream kills on any ending other than reading its body to the end. Tests
cover an early-stopped stream, an interrupted body read and a fully read
stream (no kill); each fails without its guard.
