Instead of spawning a fresh thread every time the current image changes, just have one background thread run in a loop.
This should work in all cases except for the unfullscreen button. The better solution would be to somehow register a key event handler for the header bar, but that would be harder to do.
The code is too flaky for it to run properly, and I'm not sure about how to fix this
