πŸ‘‹ Hi, I'm Gary Alvarado

I'm an M.S. Computer Science student at UC Davis (Fall 2026 – June 2028), focused on AI, computer vision, robotics, and human-computer interaction, especially where they meet. I want to build software that genuinely helps people, particularly in education and health.

I came to CS from a business background in 2024. A few months after my first C++ course, I was teaching AP Computer Science Principles at Mt. Eden High School as the long-term sub, and several of my students passed the AP exam. That classroom experience still shapes how I build: clear, approachable tools that help people learn.

πŸš€ What I'm Working On

  • 🧠 Interactive Brain Map: A 3D brain study tool for neuroscience, anatomy, psychology, and medicine students, deployed with GitHub Pages.
  • πŸ€– AI Collective @ UC Davis: Developer on the Advanced track, building AI projects with a student team.
  • πŸ¦€ Programming Languages in Rust: Learning how programming languages work under the hood by building with Rust.
  • πŸ”₯ PyTorch & Computer Vision: Learning deep learning with PyTorch and applying it to computer vision.
  • πŸ“š Also Learning: Python and machine learning, plus continued work in SQL.

πŸ”¬ Interests

  • Computer Vision & Robotics
  • AI + Human-Computer Interaction
  • Software Engineering
  • AI in Medicine & Education

πŸ› οΈ Tech Stack

  • Languages: Python, C++, Java, JavaScript, Rust, OCaml, Assembly
  • Frameworks / Libraries: React, Vite, Express
  • Tools: Git, GitHub, Linux/UNIX, VS Code, Netlify, GitHub Pages
  • Currently Learning: Rust, PyTorch

πŸ“‚ Highlights

  • Java Communication System: Team project (Software Engineering) where I worked on the client GUI, server logic, TCP/IP layer, and authentication.
  • OCaml Grammar Interpreter: A functional-language interpreter built in OCaml.
  • Quizzical: A React trivia app that pulls questions from a live API, deployed on Netlify.
  • Assembly: Endgame: A Hangman-style React game where every wrong guess wipes out a programming language.
  • BFS Flight Paths: A C++ graph program that reads city-to-city flights and finds routes with breadth-first search.
