Not sure if you folks accept PRs, but I wanted to use this with an ESP32-based microcontroller so I hacked it in.
My editor deleted trailing whitespace on lines which adds a lot of noise to the diff, but maybe you would want to accept those changes too. PEP8 says to avoid trailing whitespace, after all ;)
