Enhancement: optional strip_ansi_file_logging — keep the disk log plain and readable while the console keeps its colors

Repo: Comfy-Org/ComfyUI-Manager (formerly ltdrdata/ComfyUI-Manager; old address redirects)
Version: 3.41
OS: any (cross-platform; most useful on Windows where the console colorizes aggressively)

Motivation

When file_logging = True, Manager tees every byte to both the console and the disk log (user/comfyui_*.log). The console coloring is great. But the same ANSI escape sequences land in the file, where they do nothing but hurt: the log is harder to grep, harder to read in an editor that doesn't render ANSI, and carries a lot of stray control bytes (a typical startup log has ~190 of them — e.g. \x1b[38;5;41mPrestartup times for custom nodes:\x1b[0m).

So the request is simple: give me a plain, readable file, but keep the console exactly as it is.

Today the two destinations share one code path, so you can only have "both colored" or you manually strip the file after the fact. This enhancement adds a switch that decouples just the file branch:

  • console → byte-for-byte unchanged (always colored, exactly as it is today);
  • file → ANSI stripped, when the new switch is on.

It is the clean, low-risk way to get the "separate the file and console write paths" behavior people ask for, without splitting the logger into two objects (which is a much larger, riskier change to a file that runs before everything at startup).

Design

A single new [default] config key in user\__manager\config.ini, mirroring the existing file_logging key:

Key Default Effect
strip_ansi_file_logging True (on) When file_logging is also on, ANSI/escape sequences are removed only from the bytes written to the disk log. The console is never touched.
strip_ansi_file_logging = False — File keeps its ANSI codes (today's behavior).

Default-on is intentional: a plain file is the more useful default for people who read logs; anyone who wants the raw bytes back has a one-line opt-out. The key is read with the exact same pattern as file_logging (configparser, .lower() == 'false'), so an absent key behaves as the default True.

Where it hooks in

The logger already has a single choke point for everything that reaches disk: ComfyUIManagerLogger.sync_write(), which writes to log_file (with its timestamp prefix) and to the real console. The change touches only the log_file.write(...) branch:

  • a module global strip_ansi_file_logging = True, a check_strip_ansi_file_logging() reader (mirroring check_file_logging()), and one call site next to it;
  • a small self-contained regex for CSI escape sequences;
  • a _file_message() method that returns the exact bytes for the file (stripped when the switch is on);
  • sync_write() uses that for the file write, but keeps using the original, unmodified message for the console write.

self.last_char is still tracked from the original message (unchanged from upstream), so the timestamp/line behavior is byte-identical to today. The console path is not just "unaffected in practice" — it literally receives the same object it always did.

Proposed change

(A ready-to-apply unified diff is attached as manager-ansi-file-logging.patch.)

Why a self-contained regex, not colorama or deepdiff

The stripping is deliberately not routed through colorama (or the deepdiff.colored_view module). That is the exact dependency chain behind the companion bug in #3259 — deepdiff fires colorama.init() at import, and colorama wraps/strips the stream based on isatty()/closed. Reusing it here would (a) reintroduce that fragile import-time side effect, (b) add a deepdiff>=X requirement to the base Manager for a job it doesn't even do (it has a colorizer, no strip function), and (c) couple a core startup path to a third-party version we don't control.

The regex is 30 characters, matches the real thing (ECMA-48 CSI: SGR colors, 256-color, truecolor, ?-private modes like cursor-hide, erase/cursor codes), and provably never matches a real newline — so line structure and the [timestamp] prefixes are untouched.

Independence from #3259

This enhancement is separate from the isatty/closed defect in #3259 and does not depend on it. It applies cleanly to current main on its own (the patch was generated against a clean upstream checkout). The two are complementary: #3259 stops the console from being stripped mid-run; this keeps the file clean by design. They can be reviewed and merged independently.

Verified

  • ast.parse on the patched file → OK.
  • Regex unit-tested against real escape bytes: SGR colors, 256-color, truecolor, \x1b[?25l/\x1b[?25h private modes, \x1b[2J/\x1b[0K erase codes — all stripped; plain text, real \n, and a lone ESC — all preserved.
  • End-to-end on a Windows 11 install (RTX 5090 + 4060Ti) with file_logging = True: fresh user/comfyui_*.log is plain and readable, while the console output is byte-for-byte the colored version.

Preserve the opt-out in the legacy configuration writer.

On ComfyUI versions without the System User API, both modules use default/ComfyUI-Manager/config.ini. write_config() rebuilds [default] without strip_ansi_file_logging, so saving settings removes false. The next startup then uses the default True value. Keep the opt-out in the write-out.

Match the full CSI byte ranges.

The current pattern does not remove CSI sequences with : parameter bytes, intermediate bytes, or non-letter final bytes. The default-on file logger can therefore retain reachable CSI sequences such as \x1b[38:2:255:0:0m.

Buffer split CSI sequences for file output.

When strip_ansi_file_logging is enabled, sync_write() processes each wrapper write independently. A CSI sequence split across writes remains in the file log. Keep an incomplete CSI suffix in file-branch state, and flush it when the sequence completes or the logger closes. Continue sending each original message to the console immediately.

Adds strip_ansi_file_logging (default on) to the Manager logger: ANSI escape sequences are removed from the bytes written to the disk log so it stays plain and readable, while console output is always left untouched. Opt out with strip_ansi_file_logging = false in config.ini.
