Contributor call: qualify the LuigiOS COSMIC workstation on real hardware #12

Description

Help turn the VM-qualified LuigiOS source into a hardware-qualified community release

The current LuigiOS architecture and implementation are now merged into main through PR #11. LuigiOS is a CachyOS-based COSMIC developer workstation with a branded offline installer, locked package closure, rootless-first image workflow, and transactional Setup & Recovery stack.

The source has passed repository CI, repeated clean VM installation and login checks, and guarded destructive Btrfs recovery qualification on a disposable VM disk. It is not yet hardware-qualified or a general end-user release.

We are looking for developers, Linux testers, technical writers, designers, and accessibility contributors who want to help turn reproducible evidence into a trustworthy release.

High-value contribution lanes

  • Test installation and first boot on non-critical AMD, Intel, or NVIDIA hardware
  • Exercise Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, suspend/resume, external displays, and firmware updates
  • Exercise UEFI live-media upgrade, repair, Fresh Start, and previous-root rollback in disposable VMs
  • Review the rootless image builder, 868-package lock, and ISO inspection workflow
  • Improve contributor documentation and turn failures into minimal reproducible reports
  • Audit COSMIC and Setup & Recovery for keyboard, controller, screen-reader, contrast, and reduced-motion accessibility
  • Extend the SDK with declarative customization, isolated deployment tests, reports, and rollback-aware application

Start here

  1. Read README.md, docs/RECOVERY.md, docs/SDK.md, and the merged PR Build and qualify the LuigiOS COSMIC workstation and recovery stack #11 evidence.
  2. Read CONTRIBUTING.md, CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md, and SECURITY.md.
  3. Comment below with the lane and hardware or VM configuration you want to cover before duplicating work.
  4. Keep testing non-destructive and use non-critical hardware or a disposable VM.
  5. Redact serial numbers, credentials, keys, private firmware, personal data, and proprietary game content from every report.

Current truth, without hype

  • main now contains the current CachyOS/COSMIC workstation and recovery implementation.
  • The project is VM-beta quality; physical hardware support is not yet qualified.
  • Recovery preservation and cutover mechanics passed guarded disposable-VM testing, but physical-machine recovery remains blocked on the documented UEFI and hardware gates.
  • No general end-user release claim is being made.
  • Evidence-backed bug reports, reviews, documentation, accessibility work, and small focused patches are all valuable contributions.

Maintainers will use this issue as the public coordination board for the first hardware-qualification pass.

Thanks for the interest in qualifying LuigiOS on real hardware. Quick triage note so contributors know where things stand:

    • Status: source is merged on main via Build and qualify the LuigiOS COSMIC workstation and recovery stack #11 and has passed repo CI plus repeated clean VM install/login checks and guarded destructive Btrfs recovery qualification on a disposable VM disk. Hardware qualification remains the open gap before a general end-user release.
    • Highest-value lanes right now: first-boot + install testing on non-critical AMD/Intel/NVIDIA hardware; Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/audio/suspend-resume/external display checks; UEFI live-media upgrade, Fresh Start, and previous-root rollback in disposable VMs; and accessibility review of COSMIC and Setup & Recovery.
    • Getting started: read README.md, docs/RECOVERY.md, docs/SDK.md, then CONTRIBUTING.md. Comment below with the lane plus your hardware/VM configuration before starting so work isn't duplicated. Keep all testing non-destructive and on non-critical hardware or disposable VMs.

Appreciate anyone picking up a lane — reproducible hardware evidence is exactly what the project needs next.
