Why We Require @ManyToOne Annotation

The @ManyToOne annotation is used to define a many-to-one relationship between two entities. In this case, a CustomerOrder is associated with one Customer and one Product, but a single Customer can have multiple orders, and a single Product can be part of multiple orders. This is a classic many-to-one relationship.

  • Customer:

A single customer can place multiple orders.

The customer field in CustomerOrder references a Customer entity. The @ManyToOne annotation indicates that multiple CustomerOrder entities can be associated with a single Customer entity.

  • Product:

A single product can be part of multiple orders.

The product field in CustomerOrder references a Product entity.

The @ManyToOne annotation indicates that multiple CustomerOrder entities can be associated with a single Product entity.

What Will Happen If We Do Not Use @ManyToOne

If we do not use the @ManyToOne annotation, several issues will arise:

  • Database Schema Generation:

JPA will not know how to map the customer and product fields to their respective foreign key columns in the customer_order table.

The relationships between CustomerOrder and Customer/Product will not be correctly established in the database schema.

  • Relationship Management:

The application will not be able to correctly manage the relationships between the entities.

You will not be able to use JPA's relationship management features, such as cascading operations, fetching strategies, and proper joins in JPQL or HQL queries.

  • Query Execution:

Queries that rely on the relationships between entities will fail or produce incorrect results.

For example, fetching all orders for a specific customer would not work correctly without the @ManyToOne relationship defined.

  • Code Readability and Maintenance:

The absence of @ManyToOne annotations makes the entity relationships less clear to other developers. It increases the complexity and potential for bugs in the application, as the relationships will have to be managed manually.

Example Scenario Without @ManyToOne

Let's say we remove the @ManyToOne annotations:

In this case:

JPA will treat customer and product as simple fields and not as relationships.

There will be no foreign keys in the customer_order table to reference customer and product.

Attempts to use JPA features that depend on relationships (e.g., cascading, fetching related entities) will fail or behave incorrectly.

The resulting database schema and entity relationships will not reflect the intended design, leading to potential data integrity issues and application bugs.

Therefore, the @ManyToOne annotation is crucial for correctly mapping the relationships and ensuring the integrity and functionality of the application's data model.


In Spring Data JPA, deciding which annotation to use (@ManyToOne, @OneToMany, or @ManyToMany) depends on the cardinality of the relationship between the entities. Here’s a guide to help you decide:

@ManyToOne Use @ManyToOne when many instances of one entity are associated with one instance of another entity.

Example A customer can place multiple orders, but each order is placed by a single customer. A product can be part of multiple orders, but each order contains a single product.

@OneToMany Use @OneToMany when one instance of an entity is associated with many instances of another entity. Typically, this is the inverse side of a @ManyToOne relationship.

Example A customer can place multiple orders.

    @OneToMany(mappedBy = "customer")

@ManyToMany Use @ManyToMany when many instances of an entity are associated with many instances of another entity. This often requires a join table to manage the relationships.

Example A student can enroll in multiple courses, and a course can have multiple students.

When to Use Each Annotation @ManyToOne:

Use when multiple entities of type A are associated with a single entity of type B.

Example: Multiple orders (Order) for a single customer (Customer).

@OneToMany:

Use when a single entity of type A is associated with multiple entities of type B.

Example: A single customer (Customer) has multiple orders (Order).

Typically used in conjunction with @ManyToOne.

@ManyToMany:

Use when multiple entities of type A are associated with multiple entities of type B.

Example: Multiple students (Student) are enrolled in multiple courses (Course).

Choosing the Correct Annotation Consider the following steps to choose the correct annotation:

  • Identify the Relationship Cardinality:

    One-to-Many: One entity is related to many entities.

    Many-to-One: Many entities are related to one entity.

    Many-to-Many: Many entities are related to many entities.

  • Determine the Navigability:

    Which side of the relationship needs to be navigable?

Do you need bidirectional navigation (both sides can access each other) or unidirectional?

  • Design the Schema:

    Decide if you need a join table (for @ManyToMany) or foreign keys (for @OneToMany and @ManyToOne).

  • Define the Relationship:

    Use @ManyToOne for the many side in a many-to-one relationship.

    Use @OneToMany for the one side in a one-to-many relationship (usually mapped by the many side).

    Use @ManyToMany for many-to-many relationships, with a join table.
