Proposed Solution for Devcontainer Improvements

Based on the issue description, here are the proposed improvements:

1. 📦 Dependency Management

• Add a devcontainer.json feature to automatically install common development tools
• Create a post-create-command script that runs dependency installation
• Add caching mechanism for package installations to speed up container startup

2. 🔧 Standardized Dev Container Configuration

• Define consistent VS Code settings and extensions across all devcontainers
• Create a shared devcontainer/common directory with reusable configurations
• Implement a template system for different project types (Node.js, Python, etc.)

3. ⚡ Build Cache Optimization

• Implement Docker build caching layers for faster rebuilds
• Use CACHE_FROM in Dockerfiles to leverage previous builds
• Add script to periodically clean old cache layers to prevent disk bloat

4. 📋 Developer Experience Enhancements

• Add helpful aliases and functions to the container shell
• Include common debugging tools (curl, netcat, etc.) by default
• Set up automatic port forwarding for common development ports
