Wir können es natürlich über den WindowListener machen, aber mein erster Eindruck ist, dass es sehr leicht auch direkt als MailExtension laufen könnte, wenn die ComposeScript API nach TB78 gebackported wird. Das muss ich noch klären.

Ich hab da evtl was verwechselt, in 82 wurde "nur" das hier hinzugefügt:

Damit kann zwischen content scripts und background scripts kommuniziert werden, was u.U. nötig ist, da im content script nicht alle APIs möglich sind. (composer scripts sind content scripts)

Wenn es darauf hinaus läuft, dass die nötigen APIs erst mit Thunderbird 88 ausgeliefert werden, ist WindowListener wohl doch noch die bessere Alternative. 😅

Du könntest jetzt loslegen. MailExtensions sind deutlich einfacher zu coden als legacy extensions früher. Ich würde dich unterstützen. Hast du schonmal was in diese Richtung gemacht oder gelesen?

Der WindowListener-Port wäre mit etwas Hilfe noch ungefähr meine Kragenweite gewesen, das Neu-Schreiben einer WebExtension geht aber deutlich darüber hinaus. Ich verdinge mich im Git-Umfeld als Übersetzer, Korrekturleser, Beta-Tester und Bug-Reporter, Coding gehört nicht dazu, abseits von etwas VBScript habe ich da leider keine Meriten. Diese Aufgabe müsste jemand anderes als ich übernehmen.

Du kannst es nicht aufnehmen, wegen Zeitmangels oder weswegen? Ich meine, es ist auch nicht 'mein' Add-on, die MPL-Lizenz müsste einen "Fork" doch wohl erlauben, oder? 😅
Eine erste Grundlage wäre ja schon mal was, vielen Dank im Voraus. Einfach so wird keiner kommen, dieses Repo ist ja "invitation-only" im Moment, da Crawler/Dienste wie Gitmemory zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht mitschneiden brauchen, und die "Eigentumsfrage" noch geklärt werden müsste (d.h. in diesem Fall, wer das Repo auf Github/AMO hosten könnte). Ich kenne da zwei nette Herren, die versiert im Umgang mit WebExtensions sind und ebenso Thunderbird nutzen, vielleicht lässt sich da was arrangieren.

The base file is manifest.json. It creates the follwoing entry points:

• compose_action : Adds a button to the message composer. This will open a popup where the user can select the two different SmartQuotes modes. We currently can only add one button per extension, so the popup is used to actually trigger the two actions. The popup (popup.html / popup.js) will establish a connection to the compose window, so you can send commands to the composer and actually do something

• commands : This is a keyboard listener, so we can open the popup via shortcuts (I wanted to try that, could be useful)

• background.js : Register a keyboard listener (commands) to actually do something if the user uses Alt + Q. It also registers the compose.js scripts we want to inject into the composer.

• popup / popup.js : Sends a dummy message to the composer. You will have to make the popup pretty and attach standard click or command event listeners to whatever you use to represent the two options and let that event send commands to the composer which is then doing something

• compose/compose.js : You have full access to the DOM of the message.

@jobisoft Thank you very much for your commit. The eggshells have cracked, so I've made the repo public.

I've replaced the old .png symbols with the newer ones introduced by Mr. Marc H. (presumably "MH" on thunderbird-mail.de/forum), which are a lot nicer than the original ones (which were only present in the former "NewBuild" folder).

@jobisoft: can you help me to find the console of a composer window? I do not find anything in the UI and the typical keyboard shortcuts (F12, Ctrl+Shift+I, Ctrl+Shift+J, Ctrl+Shift+K) do not work either. Also in the debugging window of the addon the console.log messages do not appear - only error messages.

The composer does not have its own console, but it does consume the shortcuts, so nothing happens if you use CTRL+SHIFT+J in the composer. Open the console from the main window.

Is there a working version of SmartQuotes for current versions of Thunderbird? Or a way to compile the code from github into an xpi file? The only function my client needs is to see curly quotes instead of straight ones. Thanks in advance.

I assume you mean that you haven't installed Smart Quotes yet, but would like to do so? Since nobody had time to introduce a proper control panel yet, to make it ready for an official release on addons.thunderbird.net, you must download the latest ZIP file in the "Releases" section (https://github.com/spodermenpls/smartquotes/releases) and install it manually from that file, as described here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/installing-addon-thunderbird .
The XPI and ZIP file formats are congruent to each other, therefore you don't necessarily need a XPI file to install it, Thunderbird accepts extensions packed in ZIP folders too.

That worked! Thank you. I had tried exactly that, but using the Download Zip option under the Code menu. I didn't realize there was a releases page. Thunderbird sees the zip file called smartquotes-main.zip as corrupt. Thanks for your help.

I think the issue is GitHub's "modus operandi" of putting a folder with the repo's contents inside a ZIP file, instead of inserting the repo files directly into that ZIP. Otherwise it would work fine, even though with some unnecessary "ballast".

@jobisoft Do you have an estimate on how the transition to Manifest v3 might impact our extension?

I think the most important change is the non-persistent background page. If I understood that correctly, you can no longer use your background to store states, but must use local storage for it.

A few APIs will change, like the browser_action API. Could be that I will use the switch to v3 to make a few backward incompatible changes to our own APIs, where I am currently unhappy of how it got implemented.

I do not know if Thunderbird will start supporting v3 at the same time as Firefox does.
