TutorDraw v2.1 - Enhancement Changelog

Overview

This update addresses 12 major feature requests and bug fixes to make TutorDraw more powerful, intuitive, and user-friendly.


✅ Completed Improvements

1. Transparent Background by Default ✓

  • Issue: Canvas was opening with black or white screen, blocking other apps
  • Solution: Canvas now starts with transparent background
  • Details:
    • Enabled WA_TranslucentBackground attribute
    • Added is_canvas_transparent state management
    • Users can toggle transparency with button in toolbar
  • Files Modified: src/canvas.py

2. Keep Annotations on PC Interaction ✓

  • Issue: Annotations were lost when switching to mouse mode
  • Solution: Annotations persist while allowing PC interaction
  • Details:
    • Modified set_mode() to preserve shapes when switching modes
    • Set WindowTransparentForInput=True only in mouse mode to allow clicks to pass through
    • Annotations remain visible for reference while controlling PC
  • Files Modified: src/canvas.py

3. Combined Eraser with Dropdown Menu ✓

  • Issue: Two separate eraser functions created UI clutter
  • Solution: Single eraser button with context menu dropdown
  • Details:
    • Created new EraserButton class with right-click dropdown
    • Dropdown offers "Erase Single Element" and "Clear All" options
    • Main button click activates erase single mode (photoshop-style)
    • Button changes styling when mode is active

4. Settings Panel Background Color ✓

  • Issue: Settings dialog looked disconnected from theme
  • Solution: Proper theme-aware background colors
  • Details:
    • Updated settings_dialog_stylesheet in both light and dark themes
    • Added proper scroll bar styling matching theme colors
    • Text colors automatically adjust for readability
    • Frame has rounded corners and proper transparency

5. Keyboard Shortcuts System ✓

  • Issue: Keyboard shortcuts weren't working reliably
  • Solution: Improved keyboard event handling
  • Details:
    • Enhanced keyPressEvent() with better key parsing
    • Added case-insensitive shortcut matching
    • Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y always available for undo/redo
    • Escape closes the application
    • All shortcuts are configurable in settings

6. Full-Screen Board Mode ✓

  • Issue: No way to create a clean presentation board
  • Solution: Board mode for full-screen white/black backgrounds
  • Details:
    • Added BoardWindow class for full-screen display
    • Accessible via 3-dot menu → "Board Mode"
    • Press Space to toggle between white and black
    • Press Escape to exit board mode
    • TutorDraw remains available in background

7. Smooth Laser Pointer ✓

  • Issue: Laser pointer movement was jerky
  • Solution: Improved smoothing and interpolation
  • Details:
    • Enhanced Catmull-Rom spline interpolation in laser.py
    • Reduced point density threshold (0.5 instead of 1) for denser trails
    • Increased interpolation segments for smoother curves
    • Better fade-out effect with exponential easing
    • Glow effect for enhanced visibility

8. Fixed Toolbar Border Radius ✓

  • Issue: Rounded corners on toolbar weren't properly applied
  • Solution: Improved border rendering
  • Details:
    • Increased border radius to 15px for more prominent rounding
    • Fixed painting code to properly draw rounded rectangles
    • Added subtle shadow/border for depth effect
    • Consistent corner rounding across themes

9. Optimized & Modernized Code ✓

  • Issue: Code organization was scattered, UI didn't feel cohesive
  • Solution: Major refactoring for modern design patterns
  • Details:
    • Added comprehensive docstrings to classes and methods
    • Organized code into logical sections with section headers
    • Improved error handling with try-except blocks
    • Better variable naming and comments
    • UI styling more consistent with modern apps (Excalidraw-like)

10. Less-Used Functions Moved to Menu ✓

  • Issue: Toolbar was cluttered with all tools
  • Solution: Streamlined main toolbar, advanced features in menu
  • Details:
    • Removed "Select/Move" tool from main toolbar (V)
    • Added to 3-dot menu under "Tools" submenu
    • Main toolbar now focuses on: Mouse, Pencil, Shapes, Text, Laser, Eraser
    • Menu provides access to less-frequently used features
    • Cleaner, more modern interface

11. Screenshot & Recording Functionality ✓

  • Issue: Long screenshots weren't implemented
  • Solution: Full screenshot/recording suite with helpful info
  • Details:
    • Full screen screenshot: Captures entire display
    • Area screenshot: User selects specific region
    • Scrolling screenshot: Information about limitations and workarounds
    • Full screen recording: Records with audio
    • Area recording: Records specific region
    • Pause/Resume functionality
    • Proper file saving with date stamps

12. Fixed Undo/Redo System ✓

  • Issue: Undo/Redo only saved first point of shapes
  • Solution: Complete shape state preservation
  • Details:
    • Now saves ALL points of shapes, not just the first
    • Preserves color, thickness, fill, and text
    • Maintains shape selection state
    • Keeps undo stack limited to 50 states
    • Redo stack properly clears on new actions
    • Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y always available

  1. Board Mode: 3-dot menu → Board Mode
  2. Recording: Capture menu → Start Recording

🐛 Known Limitations

  • Scrolling screenshot requires manual workaround (see in-app message)
  • Some advanced window detection features pending
  • Recording requires FFmpeg for video+audio merge
