Hi @edwardkuo, can you tell us more about your linux scenario? Are you developing apps for linux, or are you using linux as a development environment and deploying apps to a different environment?

I want use this tool to create something in Linux, yes i do use Linux and my project is going to be run on Linux. It would be awesome to have this tool work in Linux just like Windows. thank you

I believe the runtime is cross platform and the CLI is not needed for this to work anymore. I agree would be nice if there was a CLI for Linux as well, but don't believe there is at this point in time

Update: Foundry Local now works on Linux. I tested it end-to-end on Ubuntu 26.04 x64 with the CLI preview release.

Install steps (not yet in official docs):

1. Download the Linux tarball from GitHub releases: https://github.com/microsoft/Foundry-Local/releases/tag/cli-preview-0.10.0 (foundry-0.10.0-linux-x64.tar.gz)
2. Extract and run install.sh (requires root or sudo for /usr/local, or manually copy to ~/.local)
3. Verify with foundry --version
4. Start the server with foundry server start

For the Node.js SDK specifically, npm install foundry-local-sdk does not ship Microsoft.AI.Foundry.Local.Core.so in the package. The SDK expects the CLI to be installed separately and discovers the native library from the CLI install path. This is different from Windows where the native binaries come bundled.

The .NET SDK (Microsoft.AI.Foundry.Local 1.2.1) works without issues once the CLI is installed.

Tested: phi-4-mini with tool calling, full end-to-end on CPU.
