https://github.com/leanEthereum/leanSpec/pull/691 was recently merged in the spec, adding a new `BlocksByRange` reqresp protocol, with a similar function as `BlocksByRoot`. Once #346 adds support for it, we can start using it in place of `BlocksByRoot` for downloading long ranges of blocks.
