The first folder that caught my attention was probably the one I used for personal plugin backups, but I can't quite remember when it was created, as it was so long ago. Then, I created several other folders with the same name beginning with "oldinstall", only to find that they had all been deleted by CMI. Is the deletion of these folders based solely on matching folder names?

Anything that begins with OldInstall it does. Never expected someone to pick that specific name to start for their stuff... I'll see what can be done, but this seems something better resolved on your end by just picking a different name.
