ADLplug VST2 not recognised in latest Reaper

ADLplug VST2 not recognised in latest Reaper only VST3 works
OPNplug VST2 and VST3 both work as intended

I am seeing this problem also, except that for me Reaper doesn't load any of the ADLplug nor OPNplug plugins, even after clearing the VST cache and re-scanning. Reaper successfully finds it internally though, as can be verified by the fact that it is listed in the reaper-vstplugins64.ini [vstcache] section. However I notice that it only has the timestamp, and no plug-in ID nor name/type. The format of the [vstcache] iiuc is:

<DLL name>=<file timestamp for checking for newer>,<plugin unique ID>,<user-friendly plug-in name>!!!<plugin type e.g. VSTi>

Other plug-ins have all four values after the =, but OPNplug.dll and ADLplug.dll only have the file timestamp -- no plugin ID, name or type. Maybe it can't extract the basic plugin info from the DLL for some reason?

I have used in the past (let's say, about a year ago) both adlplug and opnplug, the vst2 versions, in the reaper daw, on windows 10 x64, and they worked fine. But then I tried recently on windows 11 x64 and reaper 7.33 and realized the exact scenario described here, that the vst2 version of adlplug does not get recognized in reaper, only the lv2 and vst3 versions. And for opnplug all three versions (vst2, vst3 and lv2) work in reaper.

Then I tried installing several older versions of reaper up to 7.0 and none of them had any difference. After that I tried another pc, running windows 10 x64 and the vst2 version of reaper started working again. Maybe this is not something related to reaper, but related to windows 11 somehow?

I should notice that for reaper to recognize the vst3 versions I had to rename the dll files to .vst3. Maybe other daws are less picky with this but at least on reaper I had to do that before they got recognized.

I have checked the reaper-vstplugins64 file at C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\REAPER\reaper-vstplugins64.ini in the windows 10 machine and found all 4 fields. As soon as I can test in the windows 11 machine I'll update this comment to say how it looks there.

I'm back at the windows 11 machine. indeed the adlplug vst2 dll entry is missing the other info besides the timestamp

Loading the x64 ADLplug.dll vst2 dll in other software (lmms for example) works without a problem

This seems to be a bug in the reaper plugin scan algorithm. I have recently fresh installed windows 10 in my desktop and reaper (7.41) is failling to recognize the vst2 version of adl plug, it only does recognize the vst3 version.

HOWEVER, if I clear the entire vst scan path list, put there only the path for the vst2 version of adlplug and do a "clear cache and re-scan vst paths for all plugins" then it does recognize the vst2 version of adlplug.

Unfortunately, I have tried to add the vst2 version path in my path list, and, regardless if I put it in the beggining or the end of the list, it still does not recognize. Maybe having both the vst3 and vst2 versions somehow make them conflict? Who knows. Anyway, I just wanted to share this new info.

I found a way to get both recognized. First, with my full vst path list, after a scan, I got a faulty entry at "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\REAPER\reaper-vstplugins64.ini". the entire line for ADLplug.dll (the vst2 version) is "ADLplug.dll=00C98F5F2C6BD601", it is missing two fields. after that number there should be a comma, another number, then a comma, then the plugin name.

What I did was clear the entire path list, put only the directory for the vst2 version of adlplug, do a rescan for new and modified plugins (without clearing the cache). after that the other entries in reaper-vstplugins64.ini where untouched but the one for adlplug became "ADLplug.dll=0023F2612C6BD601,1094995021,ADLplug (Jean Pierre Cimalando)!!!VSTi". After that I could search for plugins and find both versions of adlplug, the vst2 and the vst3 ones.

So this is most definitely a reaper bug, not a bug of adlplug. this issue should probably be closed. @9Skrip could you test this method and see if it solves the issue for you?
