Mamba is a drop-in replacement for Conda. It can resolve dependencies much faster than conda. Although, it's still experimental, I haven't had any issue using it.

Since all the packages and their dependencies in conda repositories are all precompiled. So when you want to install a package it will automatically install the required non-python dependencies whereas pip requires the user to install them manually beforehand. This means that you need to manually install, for example, gdal on your system before installing HyRiver packages if you opt for pip installation method.

how much extra work is to precompile dependencies for conda?

There's a web service that you can use to automatically compile a Python package for installation with conda that will also upload the package to conda-forge repository. Here's its Github repo. I use this service for adding HyRiver packages to conda-forge repo. You can also do the same steps manually as described here. There's also another Python package that can help with generating required receipt called grayskull.
