We want contributing here to be a good experience for everyone, regardless of experience level, background, gender identity, disability, appearance, ethnicity, religion, or anything else. Most people contributing to this repository are doing open source for the first time. That shapes how we behave.
- Assume the other person is acting in good faith
- Be patient with questions that seem basic. Everyone was there once, including you
- Give feedback on the code, not the person: "this loop runs one extra time" not "you clearly did not think about this"
- Accept feedback the same way. A change request is not an insult
- Credit people for their work
- Harassment, insults, or personal attacks
- Sexualised language or imagery, or unwelcome advances
- Publishing someone's private information
- Dismissing or mocking beginners
- Deliberately derailing discussions or sustained disruption
- Plagiarising someone's work or claiming their contribution as your own
This applies in all project spaces — issues, pull requests, commit messages, code reviews, the community WhatsApp group — and at in-person events run by GITHUB Community GITAM.
If you experience or witness something, message a domain lead directly in the community WhatsApp group. If you would rather not use WhatsApp, or you are not in the group, message a maintainer on GitHub instead — their handles are listed in CONTRIBUTING.md. Reports are handled confidentially either way.
You will be believed, you will not be asked to justify why it bothered you, and you will not be pushed to interact with the person involved.
Maintainers may take any action they judge appropriate:
- A private word — for a one-off that was probably careless
- A warning — with an explanation of what needs to change
- A temporary ban — from the repos and community spaces
- A permanent ban — for serious or repeated violations
