Very interesting and well researched article! In particular, the switch from HIEA to HIAE has been the most thought provoking/challenging for me to relearn. I also was initially very skeptical of the change, and so reading,

"A search for similar keyboard layouts on the Keyboard-design.com website (2025) surfaced 42 layouts with HIEA on the home row, but not a single one with HIAE... However, a careful analysis of bigram frequencies reveals that the other less frequent bigrams made from these letters collectively outweigh EA’s frequency and favor the sequence HIAE"

will have me paying more attention to the consequence of this change on other combinations with other keys as I go along.

@mcmam -- I know! I was surprised as well by the overall improvement conferred by HIAE. I did a careful analysis to convince myself that indeed the cumulative advantage was real.
