When doing a backup for the first time, the logging is more verbose. I suggest the more verbose logging continue on subsequent updates. Would make it easier to debug. Another option would be to have 2 levels of verbosity with a command line argument for more verbosity.
Also your current output goes to STDERR. It should go to STDOUT unless it's a warning or error.
