In #50 I added a "validate_config" function to the config_io module, and centralized the validation of the different parts of the configuration there. It might be good to fully validate every line of the config there, to ensure users get clear and easy-to-fix error messages. For example, also check the input data paths to see if they resolve and contain any files.
