The control for the panel doesn't seem to be exposed via the API. We might be able to fix it with the order in which we create and assign node groups though.

I don't understand.

Do you mean we could toggle the DEFAULT_CLOSED from the bl_options from the tree before we create the node group?

That should work!
We must take care to restore the prior state, but that is doable.

We can't capture whether or not it is currently open when serialising, so all we can do is make sure that the default is captured and restored. Maybe making a PR to Blender to expose this would be a good idea if one of us gets the time / inclination.
